KACL Vision Statement: A Meaningful and Satisfying Life for All

There are various paths or ways to a meaningful and satisfying life. For a long time persons with disabilities were excluded, intentionally by ideology (Its for their own good), by social stigma and by physical barriers. They were excluded from traveling on common paths with family, friends and colleagues. The Association for Community Living has worked hard over the last 2 decades to change public ideology and reduce social stigma. It has long advocated for the removal of physical barriers. In 2007 it spearheaded fund raising for an accessible trail that all could walk or wheel together - a common path. It was hoped that this common path would act as a symbolic and concrete example of how a community may include rather than exclude.

What is it

An 6 ft wide Asphalt walkway runs from Nairn Avenue through the woods to Rabbit Lake. This pathway is accessible to persons in wheelchair and should provide a nice trail for individuals who would like to take an outing but cannot access many of the beautiful trails around the city of Kenora.

Cost Versus Collected

The estimated costs are Approximate $35,000.00. The Kenora Association committed to spearhead a campaign to riase $15,000 for a paved or asphalted trail. On May 8 2008, The Kenora Rotary Club donated $10,000. On June 19th the Retired Teacher's Association presented a "Project Service to Others" cheque in the amount of $3500. Other large contributors have included Bell Alliant, $812.00, Kenora Conservation Club $500.00 and Tomas Acquinas Walk N'Wheel donation of $476. The town covered the rest.

Where did the idea Originate

The idea originated from Urban trails committee of the Kenora Health Providers Group (KHPG). KHPG is a loosely organized group of representatives of major Health and Social Service Providers, City Representatives and other interested participants. This group believes that exercise is one of the most effective and efficient means to maintain wellness.

What was KACL Role

KACL knows of a number of individual residents of the city of Kenora who would benefit from and who would enjoy the opportunity to ride in wheel chairs on an accessible trail. The Association believes that some portion of the proposed Urban trail system should be paved to permit all to enjoy a portion of the trail system. KACL has taken the lead to collect funds that ultimately will be turned over to the City to make this dream a reality
