KACL Receives Kenora and Lake of the Woods Regional Community Foundation Grant

For Kids Galore Camp

Kenora, June 19 2009

Accepting the donation of $5000 for the Kids Galore Camp from Randy Seller is Sheelagh Reid and Theresa Sellers

The Kenora Association for Community Living is pleased to announce it will receive a $5000 grant from the Kenora Community Foundation for their inclusive Kids Galore Camp 2008

KACL is pleased to have the opportunity to offer an inclusive summer camp for youth 10-15 years of age. The Kids Galore Camp is a unique camp with activities geared for pre-teen and early teen students.  Many opportunities will be available to learn about themselves and their community through exploring Kenora, building relationships, learning about themselves through recreation and leisure choices and making a difference.

Themes schedule each week include:

Week 1        “WHAT’S UP IN KENORA” – Accessing your community - Living Life Out Loud
This week is focused not only on creating awareness of what Kenora has to offer, but building skills in accessing information, choosing activities, navigating transportation, staying safe, and dealing with the public
We will experience new things and share ideas and excitement of trying things for the first time.

Week 2     “ALL ABOUT YOU .. DISCOVER YOURSELF”
Preadolescents/teens are rediscovering who they are as they transition into early adulthood.  Participants will be given the opportunity to test the waters of becoming independent and discover more about who they are and what their personal style is.

Week 3  DEVELOPING SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS.. YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
This week is about shattering the myth that young teens know little about their community and are not involved.   Teens today can be empowered to believe they have ideas and opinions and with knowledge they can contribute and make a difference in their own community.

Week 4    EXPLORING THE WORLD OF WORK..What in the world are you wondering about?
Work?. . Where do I begin?  Participants will explore their interests and talents,  interview people in different careers and discover what their passions are.  This knowledge will help them be proactive in perusing their career choices.  They will learn to respect ALL types of work careers and that whatever they choose to do is honourable.

Week 5     EXPLORING YOUR RECREATION AND LEISURE LIFESTYLE
Participants will recognize that recreation and leisure is an important part of who they are and is an indicator of their QUALITY of life.  They will explore new activities that will open opportunities to improve fitness, friendships and wellness.  We will look at healthy lifestyles and guide students to make choices that will benefit their future.

The Kids Galore Camp will be hosted at the Evergreen School this year.  Registration is $125.00/week which includes fees for all activities and packages can be picked up at the KACL Central Office or call Sheelagh at 467-5204 or Theresa at 467-5227.
